How to Build a Chalkboard Laptop for Toddlers

Project Overview

No electricity is required for this laptop that doubles as a chalkboard. Perfect for imaginative play in the car or at home!

If you've got a little one who's constantly trying to "work" on your laptop, this DIY project might just save your keyboard.

This wooden chalkboard laptop for toddlers is a fun and simple build that lets kids pretend they're typing away, minus the screen time.

It does require a router, so if you're new to that tool, don't worry, grab some scrapwood and give it a few practice runs.

It's a great project for parents or grandparents who love to build and want to make something fun, creative, and totally kid-approved.

Use a table saw and rip your ½-inch sheet of plywood down to 11 inches.

Take the 11-inch strip and cut two 8 ½-inch sheets.

Use the router, set to ¼-inch depth, cut out a space that measures 6 ½ inches x 2 ½ inches. See image for spacing measurements.

Use the router set to the same depth to cut out the space on the upper board, sized 7 ½ inches x 10 inches.

Paint and/or stain to your liking. You can even use yourCricutto add a keypad!

Attach hinges so that when the "laptop" is open, the hinges stop when the upper board is in the correct position for use.

While the tools are still out, let's make something else! Here are a few ideas.
