How to Sew a Superhero Decorative Pillow

Project Overview

Try your hand at superhero crafts with this DIY pillow sewing project. Easy to make and perfect for adding a fun, colorful touch to a kid's room or play space.

If you've got a soft spot for comic books or a little superhero gag at home, this object is going to be a hit.

Today, we're diving into super he crafts with a fun DIY pillow that's simple to sew and easy to customize.

The best part? You can use any fabric you like, which means you can keep it bold and comic-style, or switch it up to match your own room's vibe.

It makes a thoughtful, handmade gift, and adds just the right amount of personality (and maybe even a little hero power) to your space.

I used several different fabrics to create this pillow with all of my son's favorite characters: Captain America, The Avengers, Star Wars, and Batman.

The most challenging part of this pillow was sketching out the sizes of each piece.

To make it easier for you, I've included a diagram. YAY!

This diagram is based on a pillow case for a 12 x 16 pillow

Please note that this diagram includes all seam allowances and was drawn to accommodate my chosen fabric.

To begin, cut out all the fabrics according to the chart above.

For the entire top portion of this pillow, I will be using ¼" seam allowances.

Next, cut the pieces of piping to go between each of the fabric pieces.

I sewed a single, long piece that ran horizontally down the center.

To attach the piping, sew it to the right side of the fabric, following the thread on the piping as a guide.

Then I placed the adjacent piece of fabric right sides together, sandwiching the piping between the two pieces.

I used my first stitch line (which attached the piping) as a guide when sewing.

Continue the process until you have piping between all of the pieces.

This is my sewn panel.

Press the panel to remove any wrinkles, and then top-stitch next to the piping to help it "pop" a little.

Here is the finished top panel.

To finish the rest of the pillow, I used anenvelope closureon the back and inserted my pillow!

Don't you just love it? I also made someSuperhero Comic Book Lettersfor my son's room. He is so excited!

Don't put that sewing machine away yet! Here are a few more fun ideas.
